How do I find out how much gravel I need? ›

Length in feet x Width in feet x Depth in feet (inches divided by 12). Take the total and divide by 21.6 (the amount of cubic feet in a ton). The final figure will be the estimated amount of tons required.

As a general guide, one ton of gravel typically covers approximately: 100 square feet at a 2-inch depth. 80 square feet at a 3-inch depth. 60 square feet at a 4-inch depth.

Calculate gravel volume: 10 ft × 10 ft × 0.166 ft = 16.667 cubic feet. Convert to cubic yards: 16.667/27 = 0.617 cubic yards. Multiply by gravel density in lb/cu yd: 0.617 × 2831.73 = 1750 lb = 0.794 tons.

Generally speaking, each ton of #57 stone can cover an area spanning approximately 60 square feet at a depth of 4 inches. At a depth of three inches, a ton of this material can cover roughly 80 square feet, while it can cover an area of 120 square feet when it is placed at a depth of 2 inches.

The ideal depth of gravel varies depending on the application, but a minimum of 2-4 inches of gravel is a workable baseline. Multiplying the area to be covered by the desired depth yields the volume of gravel you will need.

A small pickup truck (i.e. Ranger, S-10) can hold 1 cubic yard of mulch, a ½ cubic yard of topsoil, or a ½ yard of sand or gravel. A full size pickup truck (i.e. F250, 3/4 - 1 ton pickup) with a full size bed can hold 2-3 cubic yards of mulch, 1-2 cubic yards of topsoil or 1 yard of sand or gravel.

Gravel weighs 2800 lb per cubic yard. 1 ton weighs 2000 lb. Divide 2000/ 2800 = 0.714 cubic yard. 0.714 cubic yards in a ton of gravel.

The coverage of a ton of gravel depends on the size of the pebbles and the desired depth of the coverage. On average, a ton of 20mm gravel will cover approximately 10 square meters to a depth of 50mm, while a ton of 40mm gravel will cover approximately 5 square meters to a depth of 50mm.

If you are using a 10mm gravel aggregate, lay this at a depth of 30-40mm. However, if you are using this for the purpose of a driveway, this should be laid at least 50mm deep. When using a 20mm aggregate, this should be laid at least 40-50mm deep, and at least 50-60mm on driveways.

Opt for gravel that is 1/4 inch or smaller in diameter for the most comfortable walking surface. You'll want to choose gravel that has a smooth texture, too, because rounded edges are less likely than sharp ones to hurt underfoot. Gravel can be used for driveway creation purposes regardless of size.

A cubic yard is a measurement that is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet. A cubic yard measures volume where a ton measures weight. A yard of topsoil usually weighs about 1,800 pounds and a yard of gravel usually weighs about 2,200 pounds.
